Facebook, which recently beat Google to be the most-visited site of 2010, has bought Sun’s old campus in Menlo Park, as a part of rapid expansion spree by the social networking giant.

The rise of Facebook has been quite explosive in the past couple of years. According to an estimate, nearly 11 per cent of the world is now on Facebook.

Facebook added about 500 million users to its networking site last summer, and the number is expected to grow as time rolls by.

The success of Facebook can be seen from the fact that it beat Google last year to become the most-visited site in the world!

Facebook hinted that it is certainly looking forward to acquiring more talent this year, and will expand and strengthen its workforce to adapt to the growth that the company is witnessing.

Office space to accommodate the company’s growth
The reason for this new acquisition is to accommodate Facebook’s growing workforce. The Menlo Park campus previously belonged to Sun Microsystems, which was later acquired by Oracle.

It boasts of a 79-acre office space consisting of 11 buildings which together encompass nearly 1 million square feet.

The campus which was formerly the corporate headquarters of Sun Microsystems will now be a part of Facebook.

Apart from the Menlo Park acquisition, Facebook also purchased an adjacent tract of 22-acre that is linked to the Sun campus via a tunnel. A Facebook spokeswoman said that the company will be keeping the 22-acre for any future projects.

“The company has been looking for a space that suits our long-term business needs and allows us to recreate the small community feel we enjoyed while in downtown Palo Alto,” Facebook stated.

Facebook to acquire more talent this year
The social networking giant is expected to continue with its expansion spree this year.

Facebook hinted that it is certainly looking forward to acquiring more talent this year, and will expand and strengthen its workforce to adapt to the growth that the company is witnessing.

The Facebook spokeswoman said that the company had been looking for a new expansive space for long time and that the new campus acquisition should help the company to grow further.
